Escalating violence and explosive attacks in Zacatecas

Overview

Following the fatal shooting of a young woman in Cocoyoc and the death of Carlos Alberto in Michoacán in July 2026, violence in Zacatecas has escalated significantly. On 30 July, a bomb-laden vehicle detonated against a municipal police patrol in Luis Moya, killing one officer and wounding two. This was followed hours later by an armed ambush in Calera, where state and federal forces killed five assailants and seized eight long-range weapons. These incidents occurred during ‘Operativo Rastrillo’, a security sweep launched in mid-July. In response, Governor David Monreal ordered reinforced patrols, checkpoints, and road searches, particularly along the Zacatecas-Aguascalientes border.

On 27 August, security forces were targeted by at least two improvised explosive devices near San Luis in the municipality of Tabasco. The explosions triggered heavy gunfire that spread into Villanueva and Calvillo, leading the National Guard to temporarily close Federal Highway 54. On 30 August, a car bomb detonated in front of the Municipal Police Command in Ojocaliente. While initial reports indicated seven injuries, subsequent investigations revealed the blast injured 11 people and damaged more than 60 homes.

State Attorney General Cristian Paul Camacho reported that Zacatecas has seen 23 explosive attacks so far this year. Authorities have detained 18-year-old William Ariel “N” in Villa García, a suspected member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), believed to have remotely detonated a motorcycle loaded with explosives against a police patrol. The violence is attributed to territorial conflicts between the CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel. President Claudia Sheinbaum and Security Chief Omar García Harfuch visited the region to address the escalation.
