Polish agriculture commodity price volatility
Overview
In early July 2026 Polish rapeseed prices surged, reaching 2,120‑2,305₸ per tonne within four days as strong domestic demand, limited processing capacity (3.5‑3.9 Mt) and an embargo on Ukrainian seed tightened supply. Poland became the EU’s second‐largest importer of rapeseed oil after Spain. Simultaneously pig prices fell to about 4₸/kg, below production costs, driven by lower German market prices, high feed and energy costs, rising pork imports and the threat of African swine fever. Farmers demanded state compensation while the agriculture ministry announced investigations.
By late July, record‐low rapeseed yields – often below 2 t/ha and sometimes as low as 1 t/ha – together with low oil content and high contamination forced prices to slip to roughly 2,380₸/t. Frozen‐cherry prices also dropped about 16₽ year‐on“year, adding further financial pressure.
In early August the pork sector entered a deeper crisis, with slaughter prices around 4.5₸ and producers losing up to 200₸ per animal as feed, energy and labour costs remained high. AgroIntegracja announced it would stop supplying plants that do not meet certified quality systems, urging a shift toward quality‐based protectionism. The Polish oilseed‐crushing industry, facing a domestic rapeseed deficit of up to 1.3 million tonnes, called for the Ukrainian embargo to be lifted, while farmers protested the proposal and demanded higher domestic rapeseed prices.
By mid-August, the rapeseed situation worsened as sowing areas decreased by 93,000 hectares compared to the previous year. Expected harvests of 2.8 to 3.2 million tonnes are projected to fall significantly short of national processing capacities, which exceed 4.1 million tonnes. In response to these procurement challenges and the need for stable markets during harvest, the National Food Group provided Elewarr with an additional 120 million PLN to increase crop procurement, specifically for wheat and rapeseed.
