Poste Italiane expands ATM network amid service issues

Overview

Poste Italiane is upgrading its Postamat ATM network with new generation machines featuring a “cash-in” function. This allows account holders to deposit banknotes directly into the machines, providing a digital summary of denominations and receipts. As of the first half of 2026, Poste Italiane has installed 431 new units, bringing its nationwide total to 9,668. This expansion aims to mitigate “banking desertification” in Italy, a trend where commercial bank ATMs have declined from over 40,000 in 2018 to approximately 36,000 in 2025. Consequently, Poste Italiane now maintains a larger ATM presence than the entire commercial banking system in five regions: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Molise, and Valle d'Aosta.

Through “Progetto Polis,” an 800-million-euro initiative, the company is working to transform nearly 7,000 post offices in towns with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants into public administration hubs to combat depopulation and support social inclusion.

Despite this expansion, localized service failures persist. In Brenta, Mayor Gianpietro Ballardin reports that a Postamat installed in January 2026 has remained non-functional for eight months, failing to dispense cash despite repeated requests for repairs. This outage coincides with broader postal delivery delays and electronic card distribution issues in the municipality.
