Sahel security capacity building expands

Overview

In early July 2026 the Sahel Alliance pushed a unified security architecture through a series of graduations and joint initiatives across the region. Algeria’s École d’État‑Major des Forces de Sécurité awarded three‑month cohorts of 30 officers with combined military‑state‑major and master’s degrees. Mali’s school in Koulikoro presented insignia to 38 officers from ten African nations, naming Major Tapa Diallo class major. Senegal’s Kaolack school graduated 156 sergeants, including fourteen women. Burkina Faso celebrated the 30‑year anniversary of its former National School of Social Service and, on 17 July, its National Police Academy in Pabré graduated 180 senior cadres alongside 80 trainees from Chad, with Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo urging discipline and integrity. Police chiefs from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger met in Ouagadougou on 1 July to operationalise Sahel Confederation decisions, agreeing on real‑time intelligence sharing, harmonised border checks and linked police databases, as well as joint forensic capabilities and pooled equipment. On 17 July the Patriotic Movement Le Faso d’Abord launched an AI‑enhanced leadership programme for female defence personnel. Niger’s School of Higher Military graduated its fifth State Staff Course on 22 July, awarding diplomas to 36 officers from Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea and Chad. Mauritania hosted the eighth promotion of the G5 Sahel Defence College on 29 July, graduating 53 officers (34 Mauritanian, 19 from partner states) in a ceremony attended by the defence and interior ministers, who stressed the importance of human‑resource quality. On 31 July Burkina Faso inaugurated a regional judicial police service and a child‑protection brigade in Dori, Liptako, to strengthen investigative capacity against terrorist networks and safeguard children from forced recruitment and trafficking, reflecting the Alliance’s broader push to expand security structures. July and early August added further milestones.
