Sahel security capacity building expands

Overview

In early July 2026, the Sahel Alliance pushed a unified security architecture through a series of graduations and joint initiatives across the region. Algeria’s École d’État‑Major des Forces de Sécurité awarded three‑month cohorts of 30 officers with combined military‑state‑major and master’s degrees. On 29 July, Mauritania hosted the eighth promotion of the G5 Sahel Defence College, graduating 53 officers (34 Mauritanian, 19 from partner states) in a ceremony where ministers stressed that modern military power depends on the “quality of human resources.” On 31 July, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana inaugurated a regional judicial police service and a child‑protection brigade in Dori, Liptako, to strengthen investigative capacity against terrorist networks and safeguard children from forced recruitment and trafficking. In late August, Burkina Faso’s National Police launched a professional training session for 2,364 personnel at the Pabré Police Academy and other national centers.
