The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping release updates

Overview

Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment initiated a limited theatrical event in early September 2026, featuring a five-film franchise run that included the 2015 film ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’. This event provided audiences with an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming prequel, ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’. Directed by Francis Lawrence and based on the novel by Suzanne Collins, the film is set 24 years before the original trilogy and focuses on a young Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zadastars, during the 50th Annual Hunger Games.

Following the London premiere on October 28, 2026, early critical reactions have been positive. On November 1, 2026, Lionsgate and Meta announced a partnership to bring the film to audiences in 3D, with visual effects studio DNEG handling the conversion for theatrical release and Meta VR glasses in spring 2027.

Regarding the film’s music, the companion album, ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (The Album)’, is scheduled for digital release on November 13, 2026. Executive produced by Dave Cobb, the soundtrack features 29 artists, including Noah Kahan, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, and Mckenna Grace, who will perform the song “Half Alive”.

In a unique marketing move, an in-universe promotional video aired during US election night coverage. The promo features Ralph Fiennes, portraying President Snow, delivering a message about the Hunger Games that is interrupted by rebel-themed text and audio. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in Germany on November 19, 2026, and in other markets on November 20, 2026.
