Triple typhoons active in Northwest Pacific near Japan

Overview

Typhoon 25 caused significant destruction across Japan’s Kanto region, specifically impacting Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures. The storm resulted in at least 12 deaths and left three people missing following widespread landslides and flooding. In Chiba, the Inbanuma reservoir reached a record water level, causing embankment breaches and extensive flooding in Narita and Sakae.

On October 4, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Tatsunori Obayashi inspected disaster sites in Chiba, including the Inbanuma area and sections of the JR Uchibo Line. Regarding transportation, repairs to the JR Uchibo Line between Anegasaki and Nagaura are expected to take approximately three months, with substitute bus services scheduled to begin on October 5. The death toll specifically within Chiba Prefecture has reached 10 people.

As recovery continues, Typhoon 26 (Surigae) is approaching the southern Izu Islands, bringing risks of heavy rain and high waves.

A “triple typhoon” situation has now developed in the Northwest Pacific, with the Japan Meteorological Agency reporting the simultaneous activity of Typhoons 27, 28, and 29. Typhoon 27 (Choi-wan), described as a large and “very strong typhoon,” is moving near the Ogasawara Islands. Authorities have issued warnings for the islands to prepare for high waves reaching up to 8 meters and strong winds through October 6.

Typhoon 28 is projected to reach eastern waters by October 10, while Typhoon 29 (Koguma) is expected to reach the vicinity of Minamitorishima on October 9. In Taiwan, meteorologists noted that while three systems are active, they currently pose no direct threat to the island.
