Midwest faces widespread flooding and mudslides

Overview

The Upper Midwest continues to face significant flooding and weather disruptions driven by heavy rainfall and saturated ground. While southern and southeastern Minnesota experienced severe flash flooding, mudslides, and road closures on September 19 and 20, 2026, the impact has extended into Iowa.

In Iowa, the National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for several rivers in the southeast, including the English, Iowa, Cedar, and North Skunk rivers. The English River near Kalona has reached levels not seen since 2019, causing water to spill onto agricultural land and rural roads. Other monitored areas, such as the Iowa River near Lone Tree and the Cedar River near Conesville, have also exceeded or are projected to exceed flood stages.

In Minnesota, precipitation totals exceeded eight inches near Spring Valley, with more than seven inches recorded in Lanesboro and Ellendale. Infrastructure damage included a mudslide on State Highway 16 between Lanesboro and Whalan, and all streets in the Spring Valley downtown district were closed due to rising waters in Fillmore, Mower, and northern Houston counties.

As of September 30, the threat has expanded to include portions of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri due to an approaching moisture-laden system. In Nebraska, Fillmore and York Counties are under a flood warning as the West Fork Big Blue River experiences minor flooding, with water levels remaining above flood stage in areas such as McCool Junction. In Missouri, a flood warning remains in effect for the Grand River near Brunswick, impacting Chariton and Carroll Counties, with potential flooding of low-lying areas near the U.S. Highway 24 bridge.
