Overview

The 80th National Sports Festival, known as ‘Ao no Kirameki Aomori Kokuspo’, has officially entered its pre-period competition phase. Following the Japan Sports Association’s announcement that Aomori Prefecture would host the event starting September 3, 2026, preliminary events commenced in Aomori City and Hirosaki City.

Regional delegations have begun participating in these initial competitions, which are scheduled to run through September and October. The Tochigi Prefecture Sports Association has released a roster of 115 athletes and coaches to compete in two phases of these pre-period events. Scheduled disciplines include swimming, rowing, hockey, volleyball, gymnastics, sailing, sumo, shooting, golf, triathlon, and cycling. Additionally, the Akita Prefecture delegation has also begun its scheduled competitions.

As competitions progress, early events have included gymnastics, rifle shooting, and clay pigeon shooting in Hirosaki City, alongside canoeing in Nishimeya Village. In the sailing competitions held at Ohira Marina in Mutsu City, Megumi Komine secured the first victory for the host prefecture in the adult women’s windsurfing category, marking her ninth title.

Recent results from the pre-period events include Saga Prefecture’s men’s adult hockey team finishing 5th after a quarterfinal loss to Kagawa, while the Tochigi Prefecture youth men’s hockey team placed 4th. In other disciplines, Yoko Sakaguchi placed 5th in the women’s adult Canadian single canoe slalom, and the women’s adult gymnastics team earned 6th place with a score of 190.059.
