Overview

In June 2026 Deputy Chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Al Sabihi, met the Water and Environment Minister in Aden and urged faster implementation of water‑supply and sewage projects, citing a daily shortfall of about 120,000 m³ against a need of 200,000 m³ and calling for leak repairs, illegal‑well closures and aquifer protection.

Later that month Governor Abdulrahman Sheikh met Japanese Ambassador Yoichiro Nakashima, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to Aden’s recovery. Public Works Minister Hussein Al‑Aqraabi then inspected the newly completed 2.24‑km rehabilitation of Khumsayn Street, a Japanese‑UNOPS‑funded upgrade that added resurfaced asphalt, better drainage, lighting poles and pedestrian safety measures.

On 7 July 2026 the governor announced a broader agenda that includes Saudi‑funded stadium upgrades, the city’s first Olympic‑size swimming pool, road works around key roundabouts and the northern ring road, new sewage‑pumping stations, expanded hot‑water electricity lines, solar‑power installations and three desalination plants at Khur Makassar, Sira, Al‑Mala and Al‑Tawahi.

Municipal officials approved a public‑works and cleanliness programme on 12 July, followed by an inspection of the Sanitation and City Improvement Fund on 19 July. A locally funded solar‑powered street‑lighting project was launched on 26 July, and a disability‑access route survey was undertaken with the Dream of Peace organization.

On 2 August 2026 Governor Sheikh inspected a Dutch‑German funded water‑infrastructure project in Al‑Burazakh, Khur Makassar district. The €4 million programme adds an 18,000 m³ underground iron tank, a modern water‑quality laboratory, upgrades to a 70‑year‑old tank, new pumping stations and purification units, aiming to secure reliable supply for Kreiter, Khur Makassar, Al‑Mala and Al‑Tawahi.

These coordinated efforts, backed by Saudi, Japanese, Dutch, German and local partners, continue to expand daily services and model district‑wide recovery in Aden.
