The trial is also the first in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to apply the new femicide provision (Article 166a), which allows sentences of ten to forty‑five years for gender‑based killings and requires courts to consider prior abuse and power imbalances. Observers say the verdict will test whether the amendment represents substantive reform or a symbolic change, and could set a precedent for future gender‑based crime prosecutions throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.
