Cultural and economic revitalization in Rio de Janeiro
Overview
Rio de Janeiro continues its cultural and economic revitalization through large-scale urban, cinematic, and gastronomic events. The 28th edition of the Festival do Rio recently concluded, showcasing over 350 films, while Rio Gastronomia 2026 attracted over 130,000 attendees. Recent efforts have also highlighted the entrepreneurial potential of favelas through the Favela Cultech Summit 2026 and the Maré Food Festival.
The city’s cultural agenda has expanded to include historical exploration and social reflection. Free guided tours of historic venues, such as Teatro Riachuelo Rio and Teatro TotalEnergies, are scheduled for late October to showcase architecture and the history of Brazilian cinema. Regional highlights also include the 17th French Film Festival in Brazil and musical tributes to singer Belchior.
New theatrical and musical productions continue to address social struggles and identity. Directed by Roberta Estrela D’Alva, the play ‘Desfazenda – Me Enterrem Fora Desse Lugar’ is scheduled to run at CAIXA Cultural Rio de Janeiro from November 5 to 15. Inspired by the documentary ‘Menino 23,’ the performance explores the history of Black children during slavery in the 1930s and the persistence of racial violence. In Duque de Caxias, the play ‘Neutralizados,’ created by artists from the Maré community, will debut at Teatro Firjan SESI Caxias on November 6 to examine the impact of military occupation in favelas. Additionally, the musical program Cena Musical on TV Brasil will feature sambista Caxtrinho in ‘Queda Livre,’ an experimental performance recorded at the BNDES Cultural Space that reflects the identity of the Baixada Fluminense region.
