Ghana NSMQ 2026: Schools Advance to Quarter-Finals
Overview
The 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) national championship stage is transitioning into the One-Eighth Stage, scheduled to run from Wednesday, August 26, to Friday, August 28. Following the preliminary rounds, 81 schools have qualified to compete for 27 available spots in the quarter-finals. This group consists of the 27 seeded institutions and 54 schools that successfully advanced from the preliminary contests. The competition format for this stage involves three schools per contest, testing expertise in science, mathematics, and general knowledge. As the One-Eighth stage progresses, several major institutions have secured spots in the quarter-finals. Defending champions Mfantsipim School advanced after defeating Wesley Girls’ High School and Afua Kobi Ampem SHS with 66 points. In a significant upset, Presby SHS, Bompata eliminated the seeded Our Lady of Grace Senior High School (OLAG), finishing with 34 points to OLAG’s 28. Keta SHTS also qualified with a 56-point performance against Kadjebi Asato SHS and Anum Presby SHS. Other schools advancing include Prempeh College, Ghana National College, Osei Tutu SHS, Ofori Panin SHS, Pope John SHS, St John’s Grammar, and Aburi Girls’ SHS. St. Augustine’s College, which entered the stage seeking redemption after consecutive Grand Final losses, was declared the winner of its contest by forfeiture after Anlo SHS and Kumasi High School left the stage before the final round. This incident followed a dispute regarding the adjudication of a Biology question, which led to agitation and disruption in the auditorium. Organizers, Primetime Limited, stated that the withdrawal was necessary to maintain the fairness and integrity of the competition. Recent results include Labone Senior High School securing a spot with 44 points, while Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) Legon advanced with 67 points alongside St Louis SHS with 47 points.
