Hyundai 8th-gen Elantra launch and Inster SUV updates

Overview

Hyundai unveiled the eighth-generation Elantra (Avante) at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show, introducing the “Art of Steel” design language. The sedan is larger (4.77 m L × 1.86 m W × 2.75 m wheelbase) and features sharper lines, H-shaped LED lighting, and a duck-tail rear. Inside, a minimalist cockpit offers a 12.9- or 14.6-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, and Hyundai’s Pleos Connect system with the Gleo AI assistant.

Following its unveiling, Hyundai began sales of the Avante in South Korea on 5 May 2026. Pricing starts at 23.98 million won for the 2.0-L gasoline engine (≈149 hp) and 30.42 million won for the 1.6-L hybrid (≈157 hp). The new model includes standard advanced driver-assist features such as ten airbags, lane-keeping assist, and Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control 2 (NSCC2). Gasoline deliveries are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with hybrid deliveries following certification.

While the redesign offers improved interior space and quietness, early reviews noted mixed value due to price increases and performance issues with the Gleo AI and engine noise. By August 2026, market shifts indicated that the Avante’s increased size and price—with high-trim hybrids now overlapping with the Sonata’s price range—have blurred the boundary between compact and mid-size segments. This positioning helped the Avante outsell the Sonata by more than two to one in the previous year. Meanwhile, the used Grandeur IG has become a dominant force in the South Korean used car market, with depreciation making its price comparable to new entry-level compacts like the Avante.

The Inster Lounge trim of the compact electric Inster SUV was also revealed. Production for the Inster begins June 2026, while the Elantra's U.S. launch is slated for 2027.
