Indonesian immigration enforcement and deportations
Overview
Indonesian immigration authorities have continued enforcement actions involving the deportation of foreign nationals for regulatory violations. In mid-August 2026, authorities deported a Malaysian female in Parepare for overstaying her permit by 101 days. Concurrently, in Madiun, East Java, a Chinese national was deported after his temporary stay permit expired and he reportedly began working illegally as a chef. Later in the month, the Atambua Immigration Office in East Nusa Tenggara deported five Chinese nationals (identified as LH, LJ, WY, XC, and ZJ) apprehended at Atapupu Port. These individuals were suspected of attempting to use Indonesia as a transit route for illegal travel to Australia. Authorities noted the group provided false information, claiming they intended to go fishing in Maluku, though their equipment did not match standard fishing specifications. Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko stated that the agency is strengthening oversight to prevent the misuse of Indonesian territory for illegal crossings. The group was deported via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on August 25, 2026. In early September, the Cirebon Immigration Office in West Java deported an Australian citizen, JF, for overstaying a Visa on Arrival (VoA) by 62 days in Kuningan Regency. In Bali, the Denpasar Immigration Office deported a 29-year-old Chinese national, JZ, for abusing a VoA by working as a project supervisor. On September 8, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office in Bali deported a 27-year-old Australian national, BA, following an incident involving indecent behavior in a private residence in North Kuta. After being intercepted at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, authorities issued a 10-year ban on his entry. Head of Ngurah Rai Immigration, Muhamad Novyandri, stated the measure was taken to maintain order and security regarding foreign national activities in Bali. Further details emerged regarding the incident involving BA, identified as Billy Aspinall.
