KT Wiz clinches KBO regular season title

Overview

The KT Wiz have officially secured the KBO League regular season championship following a 12-3 victory over the Samsung Lions in Daegu. This win extended the KT Wiz’s winning streak to nine games as the team prepares for the Korean Series.

During the decisive matchup, KT pitcher Ko Young-pyo delivered a strong performance, pitching five innings and allowing only one run. This victory earned Ko his 15th win of the season, placing him in a tie for the league lead in wins with the LG Twins’ Im Chan-kyu and marking his first career title contention in 13 seasons. Ko noted that the Automatic Ball-Strike System (ABS) presents challenges, specifically regarding how fluctuations in the perceived strike zone can cause confusion.

Offensively, Sam Hilliard led the KT Wiz with two home runs and five RBIs, hitting home runs in three consecutive plate appearances. This performance tied him for the league lead in home runs and effectively secured the RBI title.

In the regular season finale against the Samsung Lions, pitcher So Hyeong-jun also secured an individual title. By pitching six innings and allowing only one run to reach a 10-3 record, So claimed the KBO League winning percentage title with a mark of 0.769, overtaking Choi Min-seok of the Doosan Bears. This achievement marks So’s first individual title since being named Rookie of the Year in 2020.

Following the championship, the KT Wiz have entered a period of rest and reorganization ahead of the Korean Series, which is scheduled to begin on November 2. To maintain readiness, the club has scheduled three practice games against Sangmu in late October. Manager Lee Kang-chul attributed recent team stability to his policy of consistent lineup trust, noting the resurgence of shortstop Jang Jun-won and outfielder Sam Hilliard.
