Literacy and cultural preservation initiatives in Indonesia

Overview

Indonesia continues to advance literacy and cultural preservation through regional and national initiatives. Building on previous efforts, the country marked Library Visit Day on September 14, 2026, with expanded programs. In Jakarta, the National Library of Indonesia (Perpusnas) collaborated with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to adapt ancient manuscripts into accessible formats like children’s books and comics. Concurrently, Perpusnas hosted an exhibition titled ‘Preserving Memory, Awakening Awareness’ featuring UNESCO-recognized Nusantara manuscripts.

Regional activities have intensified through festivals and community engagement. The West Sumatra Literacy Festival in Padang focused on the intersection of literacy, nature, and culture, while Kendal launched a festival to build a creative and critical society. In Yogyakarta, book discussions addressed regional history, family dynamics in the digital age, and the role of literacy in civic oversight and human development. In Sampang Regency, authorities promoted digital library services via the Demaca platform to reach remote areas.

Private and social sectors are also contributing. The Mentari Group distributed reading materials to 25 orphanages, and PT Pertamina Trans Kontinental (PTK) revitalized 57 libraries with maritime-themed resources. Digital transformation remains a priority, notably through the development of the SIKanCiL “SuperApp” in Karawang to serve as a community literacy portal.

In October 2026, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education launched 16 linguistic and literary products, including dictionaries and specialized reading materials for students with special needs. Minister Abdul Mu’ti stated these resources aim to increase public pride in the Indonesian language among the younger generation.
