Moldova 35th Independence Day celebrations

Overview

Moldova is preparing for a military parade in the Great National Assembly Square to commemorate the 35th anniversary of its independence. In early August, the National Army and security forces began joint training exercises in the Telecentru district, which necessitated temporary traffic restrictions on the R3 road.

President Maia Sandu indicated that despite an ongoing crisis, the celebrations should proceed to provide citizens with “positive emotions”. The official programme, “Independence that unites us – Moldova-35”, includes various cultural and commemorative events scheduled through the end of the year.

The main parade is set for August 27 and is expected to cost 10 million lei. According to parade commander Brigadier General Ion Ojog, the event will involve over 2,000 personnel from the National Army and various government agencies, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Intelligence and Security Service, the Ministry of Justice, and the State Protection and Guard Service, alongside 150 veterans. The ceremony will feature more than 100 units of military equipment, including infantry weaponry, artillery, and anti-aircraft installations. International participation will include color guards from several nations, such as Romania, Ukraine, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, France, Czechia, and the United States.

Preparations have progressed to include intensive rehearsals in Chisinau. Military personnel and officials have conducted the first joint rehearsals under the Hâncești road bridge. Organizers have scheduled further rehearsals, including a technical exercise involving military equipment on August 13. Additionally, President Sandu recently signed a decree promoting Brigadier General Ion Ojog to the rank of general.
