Moldovan anti‑fraud crackdown continues

Overview

The anti‑fraud and anti‑corruption drive in Moldova persisted through August 2026. On 5 August, the National Integrity Authority opened a wealth‑control investigation into former PAS deputy Alexandr Trubca after inspectors found indications of undeclared assets, foreign investments and capital increases acquired while he served in parliament. At the same time, the National Anticorruption Center and the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office detained Ștefan Eremia, head of the Advance Payments Department at the Agency for Intervention and Payments for Agriculture, on allegations that he demanded and received 130 000 lei to influence a subsidy decision; searches uncovered cash totaling 2.5 million lei. The same day, the Court of Appeal in Chișinău upheld the conviction of former deputy and ex‑ambassador Sergiu Stati for illicit enrichment, confirming a fine of 450,000 lei, confiscating nearly 2 million lei and imposing a 12‑year ban on holding public office.

On 10 August, the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) expanded its focus to a Chisinau-based company accused of agricultural fraud. The company allegedly purchased wheat and sunflower seeds worth nearly five million lei with no intention of paying, with the administrator reportedly filing for “intentional insolvency” to evade payment and hide assets. Following searches, investigators seized cash, documents, and an illegally held firearm, charging the administrator with fraud and intentional insolvency.

In a separate incident in Chisinau, police detained a 42-year-old man for deceptive solicitation. The individual was reportedly using a wheelchair to solicit money from passersby but stood up and walked without assistance upon the arrival of the Patrol and Rapid Reaction Battalion.
