Expansion of participatory budgeting in Spanish towns

Overview

In late July 2026, the municipalities of l'Ampolla and Ripollet began new participatory initiatives. l'Ampolla opened voting on five community projects for its 2026 budget, allocating €30,000 to the winning proposal, while Ripollet launched the DigiCanvis platform for municipal staff to propose and vote on internal improvements.

By early August, Algaida and Quartell launched their respective cycles. To avoid confusion, the council replaced the term ‘guarantees’ with ‘giving support’ to describe the voting process. Meanwhile, Gandesa finalized its 2026 municipal budget at nearly €4 million, including €700,000 for urban transformation and public space improvements, such as a €300,000 first phase for rehabilitating a historic former slaughterhouse protected as a Local Cultural Interest Asset (BCIL).
