Political party defections in Nigeria
Overview
Political defections continue across various Nigerian parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. In Kano State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has experienced a massive influx of members, gaining over 136,000 individuals during the inauguration of the Tinubu Support Group (TSG) 2.0 National Structure at the Sani Abacha Stadium. High-profile defectors include Kano Central District Senator Rufa’i Hanga, who was previously the state’s only opposition senator from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). His defection, alongside figures such as former Governor Kabiru Gaya and factional NNPP Chairman Mas’ud Doguwa, effectively grants the APC control of all three senatorial seats in Kano.
To bolster its 2027 preparations, the APC is intensifying structural organization. The party has appointed over 200 members to a New Media Committee to manage digital outreach and voter engagement. Additionally, support groups like the TSG are inaugurating new national and state structures to drive grassroots mobilization.
In Kaduna State, the APC Consensus Aspirants Forum has pledged to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, aiming to prioritize party unity and highlight federal infrastructure projects. Regional shifts extend beyond Kano. In Zamfara State, supporters held a solidarity walk for the re-election of President Tinubu and Governor Dauda Lawal, while Governor Bello Matawalle is preparing to join the APC. In Katsina, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has reaffirmed the state as an APC stronghold. Conversely, the APC faces internal challenges in Bauchi State due to mass resignations and primary disputes. In Adamawa, the party dismissed the defection of a campaign director to the ADC as “politically insignificant,” while in Rivers State, the Ndi Igbo community has endorsed APC governorship candidate Kingsley Chinda to avoid remaining in the opposition.
