Romania retail and airport development expands

Entities: Decathlon · eMAG · Lidl Romania · Sabin Fane · Schwarz Group

Overview

Since June, Romania has seen a wave of commercial and aviation projects. Iași International Airport signed a design contract to re‑configure terminals, while the Palas complex in Iași added dozens of new retailers and a large Primark store. Summer sales and promotions rolled out at Iulius Town Cluj‑Napoca, Iulius Mall Suceava, Lidl and eMAG. In July, BIPA opened its fifth Romanian outlet in Bucharest and Primark opened its sixth store in Sibiu, with further locations planned.

The legal hurdle for Suceava International Airport was cleared, allowing the 11,000 m² passenger‑terminal project to move toward tendering, with bids expected to open in the coming weeks. The wider airport plan also includes expanded parking, a new electric plant and upgraded navigation equipment.

Timișoara International Airport confirmed a temporary suspension of all take‑off and landing operations from 08:00 on 2 November 2026 until 21:00 on 22 November 2026 to carry out essential runway repairs.

Retail activity continued with Lidl’s Costești store launching a summer promotion (27 July‑16 August) offering up to 35 % off everyday items and 30 % off DIY and garden products, plus vouchers via the Lidl Plus app. eMAG ended its Electro Weekend with a flat 300 lei discount on Lenovo bundles and up to 500 lei off selected smartphones, while promoting a Cooling Week with price cuts on air‑conditioners and refrigerators. Decathlon’s Camping Week offered up to 30 % off tents, sleeping bags and other outdoor equipment.

These actions reinforce the ongoing expansion of Romania’s retail market and the continued modernization of its airport infrastructure.
