Rio Grande do Norte 2026 governor race
Overview
Former Natal mayor Álvaro Dias secured former mayor Jefferson Santos’s endorsement in mid‑June, focusing his pre‑candidate profile on health regionalisation. By early July, Union councilor Robson Carvalho entered the state‑deputy race, Eriko Jácome gathered municipal support in São Gonçalo do Amarante, and the PSDB formally endorsed Dias on 17 July while beginning coalition talks with the Republicanos. The left‑wing ticket announced former Mossoró deputy Larissa Rosado (PSB) as Cadu de Lula’s (PT) running mate, emphasising gender parity.
Polling on 22 July showed PT candidate Cadu Xavier leading with 36.3 % of voter intention, ahead of Dias (27.7 %) and incumbent‑aligned Allyson Bezerra (25.1 %). A second‑round simulation placed Xavier at 45.7 % versus Dias and 39.4 % versus Bezerra. Analysts linked the opposition advantage to a 56 % disapproval rating for Governor Fátima Bezerra and highlighted security and public dissatisfaction as key issues.
Cadu de Lula reinforced his lead by gathering roughly 40 mayors, as reported in an Atlas poll confirming the 36.3 % figure. Aluisio Mendes, another local figure, strengthened his political base in São Luís, suggesting a possible emerging candidacy.
The right‑wing bloc continues to coalesce, with PSDB, Republicanos and União Brasil discussing a joint ticket. Both Dias and Bezerra stress infrastructure, health and pandemic‑response records as the election nears, while the combined opposition now commands about 68 % of voter intention.
