Sony 2026 camera and lens launches

Overview

Sony’s July–August 2026 rollout continued to expand its high-resolution, AI-enhanced camera family and accompanying optics. After the Alpha 7R VI debut in India (3 July) and the RX10 V bridge launch (9 July), the A7R VI was unveiled on 17 July with a 9.44-million-dot EVF, 30 fps blackout-free RAW, 16-stop dynamic range, 8K 30 p video and a new FE 100-400 mm f/4.5 GM OSS lens featuring four linear motors.

On 4 August, Sony announced a lightweight counterpart: the FE 100-400 mm F5.6-8 OSS super-telephoto lens. Weighing about 654 g and measuring 164.5 mm, it uses a 15-element, 10-group design with two ED and two aspherical elements, a nine-blade circular aperture and optical SteadyShot stabilization. The lens supports a 2× teleconverter (up to 800 mm, 1,200 mm in APS-C), offers up to 120 fps continuous shooting with the Alpha 9 III, and is priced around €900/$850/¥140,000. Pre-orders opened 18 August with sales slated for early September.

Further technical details regarding the Alpha 7R VI highlight its 66.8-megapixel fully stacked sensor and new Bionz XR2 processor. The camera features an AI-based autofocus system, 8.5 stops of image stabilization, and 8K video support. Notably, the device introduces the NP-SA100 battery, which is incompatible with previous NP-FZ100 models. While reviewers suggest the camera effectively “collapses the need for multiple specialized bodies” by merging high resolution with high burst speeds, they note that 30 fps shooting generates approximately 1.8GB of data per second.

In mid-August, additional details on the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS lens highlighted its dust- and moisture-resistant design and the use of recycled materials. As part of Sony’s ‘Road to Zero’ sustainability initiative, over 41% of the lens’s total plastic weight consists of recycled content.
