Overview

In July 2026 the San Sebastián International Film Festival confirmed a September programme centred on 25 Spanish‑produced works – 23 feature films and two TV series – with the Official Competition anchored by the Spanish titles “El mal padre”, “Sants” and “5 minutos más”. New Spanish entries such as the historical thriller “Sacamantejas” and the six‑part police drama “El castillo” were added, while media groups Movistar Plus and Atresmedia highlighted their flagship bets.

The same week, Spanish distributors announced two theatrical releases for 24 July: a comedy‑romance remake directed by Mar Olid and the Australian horror‑drama “Sacacharine”. They also promoted the Audi Future Stories short‑film winner “El triplete”, which will debut at the festival.

On 28 July the festival broadened its Official Competition with seven international titles from directors Pablo Larraín, Mike Leigh, Yeşim Ustaoğlu, Nicole Garcia, Benjamín Naishtat and Hans Petter Moland, joining the three Spanish entries and reinforcing the event’s mix of established auteurs and emerging talent.

In early August the festival announced a José Giovanni retrospective, screening twenty of the French crime writer‑director’s films and publishing a companion volume, underscoring the festival’s broader curatorial scope alongside its support for Spanish cinema.
