Death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan

Overview

Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, widely known as Ogogo, died at the age of 66 on August 23, 2026, following a battle with stage-four cancer. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during a social media live session. Prior to his passing, Hassan’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, had issued public appeals seeking medical recommendations, noting that Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) had been providing financial support. New details regarding his final medical efforts reveal that Senator Adeola attempted to facilitate treatment in India, but delays in the visa application process left Hassan too weak to fly. In response, the Senator arranged for a medical doctor from India to be flown to Nigeria to assist with his care. Hassan was subsequently moved to St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos, where specialists provided treatment until his condition declined five days before his passing. Veteran actor Peter Fatomilola expressed regret that he was unaware of the health struggles until the family’s public appeal. Hassan was a prominent figure in the Yoruba film industry, recognized for his mastery of Yoruba proverbs and his background as an ‘Akede Oba’ (praise chanter). Following his death, Kira Taiwo shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, describing her father as ‘the best’. His passing drew tributes from President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa. Following his burial on August 24, 2026, in Ilaro, Ogun State, the Chief Imam of Ilaro, Sheikh Muhammad Tajudeen Mustapha Adewunmi, returned N25 million to Hassan’s family. The funds had been entrusted to the cleric by the actor for the renovation of his grandfather’s house.
