Transfer speculation surrounding Martin Zubimendi

Overview

Arsenal is navigating a period of midfield transition following the £75 million signing of Bruno Guimarães. While the club previously intended to retain Martin Zubimendi as an “essential part of their project,” his position has become less certain due to increased squad depth and the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly.

By September 2026, Zubimendi’s lack of playing time intensified speculation regarding a January 2027 exit. Despite his importance to previous campaigns, he has struggled to secure a starting role behind players such as Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, and Guimarães. While Mikel Arteta has publicly defended him, Zubimendi has expressed frustration regarding his limited minutes, noting he desires to be a key player. His international form remains high, highlighted by a standout performance for Spain in the Nations League against Croatia.

Real Madrid has emerged as a primary suitor, viewing the 27-year-old as a solution to bolster midfield control. While Arsenal reportedly considered offers around €75 million, Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez previously indicated a refusal to negotiate above that figure. Recent reports suggest Zubimendi is actively seeking a move to Real Madrid to provide tactical support for players like Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé.

Other suitors include Chelsea, which has been linked to a £60 million bid, and Paris Saint-Germain, with reports suggesting a potential €80 million valuation. FC Barcelona also remains interested, monitoring him as a long-term alternative to the injury-prone Frenkie de Jong due to his ability to dictate tempo under Hansi Flick’s tactical system.
