Vietnam 2026 National Day and August Revolution preparations
Overview
Vietnam is observing the 81st anniversary of the August Revolution and preparing for a five-day National Day holiday from August 29 to September 2, 2026. The milestone commemorates the 1945 transition from colonial rule to the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Beyond celebrations, the nation is focusing on long-term development goals for 2030 and 2045, aiming to become a high-income economy through technological mastery and administrative reforms.
As the anniversary approaches, international observers from Mexico and Argentina have characterized the August Revolution as a decisive turning point for self-determination. While some critics suggest the revolution succeeded due to a power vacuum following Japan’s surrender, local perspectives maintain the victory was the result of organized revolutionary efforts.
Commemorative activities are underway nationwide. In Quang Ngai Province, citizens and students gathered at Ba To Park to create a map of Vietnam using 8,100 national flags. In Hanoi, preparations include decorating landmarks, a 15-minute fireworks display for September 2, and free admission to historical sites like the Hoa Lo Prison Relic. To facilitate travel, the city will waive fares for 128 bus routes and two metro lines.
Authorities are also leveraging these festivities to boost cultural tourism. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) reported that the country welcomed approximately 13.9 million international visitors during the first seven months of 2026, a 13.8% increase over the previous year. Industry experts note a global shift toward heritage travel, with travelers increasingly interested in exploring local life through gastronomy, museums, and community festivals.
