Bank Indonesia leadership transition
Entities: President Prabowo Subianto · Prabowo Subianto · Destry Damayanti · Bank Indonesia · Perry Warjiyo
Overview
Governor Perry Warjiyo resigned for personal reasons on 27 July 2026; President Prabowo Subianto accepted the resignation and appointed Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as acting governor under the Bank Indonesia Law. The rupiah slipped to about Rp 18,009 per dollar and the Jakarta Composite Index fell roughly 0.5 %. Damayanti reassured markets that the monetary‑policy stance would remain unchanged and that the central bank would continue its triple‑intervention strategy (spot, NDF, DNDF) to stabilise the rupiah. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto echoed this, saying the fiscal‑monetary framework stays solid.
Lawmakers, including PDIP’s Hasto Kristiyanto, Gerindra’s Azis Subekti and PKB’s Marwan Jafar, stressed the need for a permanent successor who can protect the bank’s independence, manage inflation and the exchange rate, and uphold autonomy. Reuters reported a months‑long dispute between Warjiyo and Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa over liquidity policy may have contributed to the departure.
On 28 July, market data showed the rupiah weakening further to roughly Rp 18,080‑18,106 per dollar. S&P Global Ratings said the resignation does not affect Indonesia’s sovereign rating. The Corruption Eradication Commission signalled a possible questioning of Warjiyo in a probe of a Bank Indonesia social‑assistance program. A KSSK meeting with President Subianto reaffirmed that monetary policy will remain unchanged under the acting governor while a permanent appointment is pursued.
