Ethereum Glamsterdam upgrade development

Overview

The Ethereum Foundation and ethPandaOps have launched Platåberget, a short-term public testnet designed to facilitate testing for the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade. The permissionless network allows validators, builders, and infrastructure providers to rehearse coordination between execution and consensus clients before the mainnet rollout, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Technical developments include EIP-7732, which introduces enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) to alter how blocks are built and validated, and EIP-7928, which aims to introduce block-level access lists (BALs) to enable parallelization of disk reads and verification. EIP-7732 specifically establishes a Payload Timeliness Committee, providing proposers and validators specific windows to validate payloads.

To address growing state size, the upgrade will implement gas repricing via EIP-8037 and EIP-8038. These aim to align costs with computational resources, including a proposed 200 million gas floor and increased maximum sizes for deployed contracts. While most transactions should remain unaffected, developers using hardcoded gas assumptions may face execution failures. Historical replays suggest many issues can be resolved by increasing gas limits, though some contracts may require structural changes.

As preparations continue, Nethermind has completed over 2,300 performance tests, processing approximately 570.7 billion gas in a three-minute window. However, developers have issued warnings regarding a potential ‘fake builder’ attack on the Sepolia testnet starting October 6. This theoretical attack involves using free testnet ETH to manipulate block bids, which could disrupt the reliability of testing necessary to finalize the Glamsterdam implementation schedule.
