Japan summer retail and anime pop‑up wave

Overview

Throughout the summer of 2026, Japanese retail and entertainment sectors saw a massive wave of seasonal promotions. Early June featured low-cost summer apparel and cooling accessories from FamilyMart and Shima-mura. FamilyMart expanded this with its ‘Convenience Wear’ line and a new flagship ‘FAMIMA PARK AZABUDAI’ in Tokyo, designed as an experience-focused showroom.

Retailers launched various seasonal sales, including Global Style’s suit promotions in Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, and Ginza, as well as specialized yukata and towel sales. Limited-edition summer goods became a major trend, including mesh pouches from Kokuyo, Cojicoji-themed bags from Cafe de Crie, Moomin collections from Kinokuniya, and Hello Kitty insulated bags. Food and beverage brands also participated, with KALDI’s summer coffee bags, Zettaria’s coupon-inclusive summer bags, and seasonal cocktail and parfait menus at Mitsui Garden Hotel Yokohama and Ryubo Okinawa.

Anime and character collaborations remained a dominant force. Major events included the ‘Haikyuu!! On the Court’ experience, ‘Detective Conan’ escape games, and Yebisu Beer’s Ai Yazawa exhibition. ROUND1 hosted nationwide Oshi no Ko and Rilakkuma campaigns, while pop-up shops for Pokémon, L’Occitane, and Oni-Ai-Puri appeared in major cities. NiJiGenNoMori expanded its reach with pop-ups in Tokyo and Shizuoka. By mid-August, the wave continued with a ‘Hozuki no Reitetsu’ summer festival pop-up in Akihabara.
