Barcelona finance, Alvarez stall, Kroupi pursuit

Entities: Julian Álvarez · AFC Bournemouth · Eli Junior Kroupi · Hansi Flick · FC Barcelona

Overview

By late May 2026 Arsenal had secured the Premier League title, lost the Champions League final and confirmed manager Mikel Arteta on a long‑term contract while operating with a £250 million budget. Their primary targets remained Argentine striker Julián Álvarez, Turkish winger Kenan Yıldız, midfielder Morgan Gibbs‑White and several left‑wing and defensive free agents.

Barcelona, under Hansi Flick, continued to fund its €100‑plus‑million Álvarez bid with a €210 million loan drawn in two tranches and a €105 million senior secured notes issuance to bolster its treasury and the Espai Barça stadium project. The club’s top priority remained Álvarez, offering around €100 million with post‑World‑Cup variables and planning a swap package involving Ronald Araujo, Marc Casado and Ferran Torres.

In July 2026 the Álvarez negotiation stalled after Atlético Madrid rejected a €100 million offer and Real Madrid also declined Barcelona’s terms. With the target unavailable, Barcelona re‑opened talks for 20‑year‑old French forward Eli Junior Kroupi of Bournemouth, whom sporting director Deco views as a long‑term successor to Robert Lewandowski. Bournemouth have labelled Kroupi “untouchable”, setting a price near €130 million despite the player’s market value being lower. Barcelona consider the fee beyond the current budget but still regard him as a suitable profile, while Manchester City have also shown interest.

The pursuit of Kroupi underscores Barcelona’s urgent need for a new centre‑forward following Lewandowski’s departure and reflects the club’s willingness to allocate part of its recent financing to secure a young Premier League talent.

In the Premier League, Arsenal confirmed a bid for Aston Villa centre‑back Ezri Konsa as his contract expires, while Newcastle United pursued Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and retained interest in Manchester City keeper James Trafford, after already securing France prospect Ewen Jaouen and keeping Nick Pope as first‑choice.
