Finland midsummer festivities and summer weather volatility

Overview

In mid‑June, South Karelia towns prepared midsummer bonfires while Helsinki launched a free‑event programme that combined the Juhannus holiday with Pride week. The Finnish Meteorological Institute warned of warm, clear weather but issued thunderstorm and strong‑wind alerts for northern and western regions. No fire bans were imposed, though rescue services stressed safety; the weekend saw seven accidental deaths and three homicide investigations.

By late June the parliamentary spring session ended and lawmakers turned to summer issues, including NATO and Ukraine support, while citizens celebrated birthdays, theatre outings and waterfront walks.

On 11 July heavy‑rain warnings covered much of southern Finland, with up to 20 mm per hour and temperatures of 23‑30 °C. Flood alerts, flight restrictions at Helsinki‑Vantaa, a lightning‑induced house fire and widespread power outages were reported. Rescue services responded to dozens of flooding, tree‑fall and electrical‑failure calls, and rail and road traffic were disrupted across the affected counties.

A further low‑pressure system moved in on the weekend of 16 July, bringing very heavy rain—up to 50 mm in parts of Kainuu and North Ostrobothnia and 30‑40 mm elsewhere, while temperatures fell to 10‑15 °C. Liikenneturva warned that the downpours would reduce visibility, lengthen braking distances and raise aquaplaning risk.

In August, a new low-pressure system brought widespread rain and wind to much of the country. Wind warnings were issued for North Ostrobothnia, North Savo, and Central Finland, where gusts could exceed 15 meters per second. While Lapland remained cool, southern Finland saw temperatures around 24 °C, accompanied by local forest fire warnings.
