Francesco Guccini death and tributes

Francesco Guccini, the celebrated Italian singer-songwriter, poet, and novelist, died on 6 August 2026 at age 86 in his home village of Pàvana. Following his wishes for discretion, a private funeral service was held on 8 August in the courtyard of his family home in Pàvana. Attended by approximately forty close friends and family members—including his wife Raffaella, his daughter Teresa, and Cardinal Matteo Zuppi—the ceremony featured a tribute from Teresa Guccini, who spoke of her father's legacy of questioning and seeking answers. Cardinal Zuppi also addressed Guccini as an "agnostic possibilista" who never stopped seeking answers.

The coffin was decorated with flowers, berries, a photograph, personal items such as a copy of his book "Maigret a Paris," and a collage of his beloved cats. Following the service, Guccini was cremated in Bologna; his ashes are to be interred in the municipal cemetery in Pàvana.

The municipalities of Bologna and Modena declared days of city mourning. Tributes poured in from the Italian music world, including messages from rocker Vasco Rossi and the group I Nomadi, as well as from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Fans gathered spontaneously at his former residence in Bologna to leave flowers, notes, and wine. The Club Tenco issued a statement describing Guccini as an absolute reference for Italian song, noting his role in bringing literary dignity to popular music. Additionally, Rai has scheduled a television special to commemorate his artistic career.

A public commemorative ceremony is planned for September. The historic Osteria delle Dame, which Guccini co‑founded in 1970, will reopen as a museum that month, and a posthumous novel, *Calde le pere*, is also scheduled for publication.
