Google ends Android Marshmallow support, Xiaomi impacted

Entities: Google · Google LLC · Android 6.0 Marshmallow · Google Play Services · Xiaomi Corporation

Overview

Google announced that core Android apps and services will no longer support Android 6.0 Marshmallow, ending official updates after eleven years. The change raises minimum OS versions for several Google apps—YouTube now requires Android 10, the Google app needs Android 11, and Gmail requires Android 7.0 (Nougat). Google Play services also raised its minimum requirement from Android 6.0 to Android 7.0.

Devices still running Android 6.0 or earlier will retain basic functionality but will no longer receive updates for these apps, leading to missing features, security patches, and reduced compatibility. In addition, the cessation of Play Services updates disables essential security features such as Play Protect on 13 older Xiaomi models (including the Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi Note and several Redmi devices), causing major Google apps to refuse to run. Users of affected hardware must upgrade to a newer smartphone or pursue a custom‑ROM installation.

While the impact on legacy devices is limited to a small user base, the move underscores Google’s broader hardware ecosystem shift as it prepares to launch newer Pixel models later this year.
