Google launches Fitbit Edge fitness tracker

Overview

Following initial FCC filings for a device identified as G8BL6, Google has officially released the Fitbit Edge. Positioned as a midrange, ‘smart-lite’ successor to the Fitbit Charge 6, the device bridges the gap between the screenless Fitbit Air and the premium Pixel Watch 5.

The Fitbit Edge features a 1.34-inch AMOLED display, offering 46% more viewing area than previous trackers, housed in a pill-shaped design made of recycled aluminum. It is notable for being Google’s first repairable fitness tracker due to its user-replaceable 65 mAh lithium-ion battery and modular architecture. Technical specifications include built-in GPS, an altimeter, water resistance up to 50 meters (5ATM/IP68), and support for over 50 exercise modes. The device also includes a redesigned physical side button for tactile control.

Health monitoring is supported by sensors for ECG, SpO2, skin temperature, and heart rate variability. Advanced features, including ‘Health Guardian tools’ for monitoring blood pressure and insulin resistance trends, and Gemini AI-powered coaching via the Google Health Coach, require a Google Health Premium subscription. New models include a Stephen Curry Special Edition priced at $219.99, while the standard model retails for $179.99 in the US. Both versions include three months of Google Health Premium.

In conjunction with the launch, Google transitioned Fitbit’s menstrual health features into the Google Health app under the name ‘Cycle health’. This tool allows users to log period dates, symptoms, and ovulation results for estimated cycle trends. Google specifies that ‘Cycle health’ is for informational purposes and is not a medical device for contraception or clinical findings.
