Holiday season preparations in Spain and Portugal

Overview

Cities in Spain and Portugal are continuing preparations for the upcoming holiday season through large-scale light installations, festive markets, and cultural programming. In Spain, Vigo is preparing for an extensive season that combines holiday decorations with a diverse cultural schedule. The Auditorio Mar de Vigo has announced over 30 shows, including music, opera, and musicals, through January 2027. Mayor Abel Caballero described the schedule as a “brilliant stage in the field of culture.” Regarding decorations, Vigo plans to deploy between 12 and 13 million LED lights and 7,000 luminous motifs across approximately 500 streets and squares. Installations have begun in central areas such as Colón and Urzáiz streets, while a Christmas ‘forest’ of small trees is being installed in Porta do Sol. To manage crowds and distribute economic benefits, Mayor Caballero has confirmed the relocation of the Cíes Market and the city’s Ferris wheel to the Vialia intermodal station area. Vigo is also advancing its Three Kings Parade, which will follow a “nature and magic” theme involving a “magical forest” concept. In anticipation of the season, local hotels are already managing high demand by implementing booking restrictions. New festive activities in Vigo include the installation of traditional chestnut roasting stations and the introduction of the ‘Papanoelada Runner’, a running event featuring 5km and 10km routes through Samil and Navia. In the Galicia region, several cities are increasing holiday budgets. Lugo has awarded a contract worth approximately 216,000 euros plus VAT—a 60% increase from the previous year—to introduce three-dimensional elements in Plaza de Santo Domingo. Pontevedra is also increasing its investment by 25%, with a budget of around 230,000 euros. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the official light switch-on is scheduled for November 19, with decorations expanding to over 600 locations.
