Honda Prelude relaunch and global expansion

Overview

Following a significant decline in European passenger-car sales, which dropped 77% from 2007 levels to 72,000 units in 2025, Honda has initiated a new growth strategy focused on vehicles with distinct personalities. As part of this direction, the company showcased the Prelude HRC Concept, a race-inspired hybrid sports coupe. Honda has since officially reintroduced the Prelude nameplate after a multi-decade hiatus.

The new generation is a hybrid coupe built on the Civic platform, utilizing an e:HEV powertrain that combines a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with two electric motors. To enhance driver engagement, the model features ‘S+ Shift’ technology, which uses steering wheel paddles to simulate gear changes, and Active Sound Control. The first Prelude Advance unit was delivered in Portugal in late July.

The relaunch has expanded to the Brazilian market, where the sixth-generation Prelude has launched at a price of R$ 380,000. This version features a 2+2 seating configuration, a 264-liter trunk, and an interior equipped with a Bose sound system. While built on the eleventh-generation Civic platform, this model utilizes a shortened wheelbase and wider track inspired by the Civic Type R. Its e:HEV system produces a combined peak output of 203 cv and 32.1 kgfm of torque.

Regarding the 2026 model, the Prelude features a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2-liter, 16-valve Atkinson cycle gasoline engine producing 143 horsepower and an electric motor producing 184 horsepower. The system utilizes Honda’s E-CVT technology to manage three modes: electric-only for low speeds, hybrid mode for immediate power, and combustion mode for higher speeds. In Brazil, the model includes driving modes such as Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual. In Japan, Honda has announced a ‘2027 Limited Edition’ for the new Prelude, scheduled for release on August 20.
