Iranian domestic automotive market volatility
Overview
The Iranian automotive market has experienced ongoing instability characterized by significant price volatility and diverse valuation factors. In early August, market fluctuations were driven by daily exchange-rate changes and rumors regarding potential gasoline price increases. By early September, the market displayed a notable divergence in pricing trends. Domestic vehicle prices showed signs of correction and decline in certain models due to recessionary pressures and low consumer demand. Conversely, the segment for high-end and imported vehicles continued to face significant price hikes.
By September 8, 2026, the market trend shifted toward a sharp price surge driven by rising gold and US dollar rates, which have strengthened inflationary expectations. This volatility is mirrored in parallel markets, where 18-karat gold prices have exceeded 24 million tomans per gram and the US dollar has traded above 232,000 tomans. In the automotive sector, both domestic and imported models have seen substantial increases. Domestic manufacturers Iran Khodro and Saipa reported price hikes for various models, including the Tara Automatic and Peugeot 207. In the imported segment, luxury vehicles such as the Lexus LX700h and high-end electric models from Mercedes-Benz have also experienced significant price climbs.
Recent data from the Majlis Research Center indicates a broader recovery in the imported vehicle market following a five-year period of stagnation caused by import bans between 2018 and 2022. Passenger vehicle imports rose from 11,236 units in 2023 to an estimated 67,000 units by 2025. While the average dollar value per imported vehicle initially dropped to $19,000 due to a focus on economy models, prices trended upward to an average of $22,841 by 2025. The total dollar value of passenger vehicle imports in 2025 reached $1.5 billion, the highest level since 2016.
