Kaşif Kozinoğlu death investigation in Turkey

Overview

The investigation into the 2011 death of former National Intelligence Organization (MİT) official Kaşif Kozinoğlu at Silivri Prison continues to evolve. Following the overturning of a previous non-prosecution decision, the Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has ordered the exhumation of Kozinoğlu’s grave in Istanbul’s Ümraniye district for forensic examination.

Authorities intend to conduct detailed toxicological and chemical analyses on tissue samples to determine if Kozinoğlu was administered unauthorized medications, specifically reviewing Coraspin and vitamin supplements he requested shortly before his death. While the exhumation at Kocatepe Cemetery was recently postponed, the procedure remains planned and will involve a team of forensic experts, chemists, and autopsy technicians to collect bone and soil samples. These will be analyzed alongside prison camera footage, emergency service records, and hospital documents.

Law enforcement operations have expanded through multiple waves of detentions. An initial operation targeted 11 prison staff members, resulting in 10 detentions and one fugitive. A second wave expanded the scope to include medical personnel, such as a doctor and ambulance drivers, as well as a journalist and cameraman. A subsequent wave led to the detention of nine additional individuals, and reports indicate the investigation has now extended to the Ereğli district of Konya.

To date, one suspect, a former gendarme, has been arrested, while others remain under judicial control or have been released. Furthermore, handwritten defense notes recovered from Kozinoğlu, in which he claimed to be a ‘chosen scapegoat’ in the Ergenekon case, have been added to the case file.
