Mexican airline route expansion
Entities: Aeropuerto Internacional del Bajío · Claudia Sheinbaum · Aeropuerto Internacional Felipe Ángeles · Leobardo Ávila · Mexicana de Aviación
Overview
June‑July 2026 saw a wave of new domestic and cross‑border services by United, Volaris and the state‑owned Mexicana de Aviación. United and Volaris opened several Mexico‑U.S. routes, while Volaris added Puebla–Los Angeles and domestic links from Aguascalientes to Puebla and Puerto Vallarta. Mexicana expanded its presence at Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), launching flights to Guanajuato, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Hermosillo, Hermosillo’s sister city Ángel Albino Corzo and other regional hubs.
In late July the Hermosillo service was reiterated at the Tianguis Turístico México 2026, with Governor Alfonso Durazo and President Claudia Sheinbaum stressing cheaper tickets and tourism benefits. Mexicana also announced a fleet increase to 20 aircraft, adding Embraer E‑190/E‑195‑E2 jets and planning further deliveries through 2027. The carrier’s 19th route, AIFA‑Bajío International Airport (Guanajuato), began operating weekdays for business travelers and Sundays for leisure, extending the airline’s domestic network and supporting the government’s job‑creation and low‑cost travel agenda.
