Participatory budgeting processes in Polish cities

Overview

Participatory budgeting processes are actively moving into voting phases across several Polish cities.

In the Silesian region, Katowice has commenced voting for its civic budget, which runs from September 10 to September 23. Residents are deciding on 213 projects—comprising 23 city-wide and 190 local initiatives—with a total value of nearly 31.8 million PLN and a distribution pool of 19.7 million PLN. The city’s ‘Green Budget’ has also reached the expert evaluation stage for 189 ecological projects valued at over 6.8 million PLN.

Other Silesian municipalities are also engaged in various stages of their cycles: Zabrze is conducting voting for 67 projects through September 25, while Tychy and Chorzów are scheduled to begin their respective voting periods on September 15 and September 20.

In Kraków, voting for the 13th edition of the city’s participatory budget is underway until September 28. With 54 million PLN available for distribution, 440 projects are under consideration, including 73 city-wide and 367 district-level proposals. Under transparency rules, residents with a PESEL number can vote for up to three district and three city-wide projects, assigning between one and three points to each to indicate support. Voting is accessible via the official budget website or the mKraków mobile application.
