Star Wars Zero Company launch, updates, and studio turmoil

Overview

Following its August 27 launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, *Star Wars Zero Company*—a collaborative effort between Bit Reactor, Respawn Entertainment, Electronic Arts, and Lucasfilm Games—has seen strong commercial and critical performance. The game reached the top of Steam’s best-seller chart, peaking at over 77,000 concurrent players, and debuted at number one on the official German game charts for August 2026.

Set during the final stages of the Clone Wars, the single-player turn-based tactics game follows Hawks, a former Republic officer leading a mercenary unit known as Zero Company against a separatist sect called The Spiral. Gameplay features deep base management at a location called ‘The Den,’ where players manage resources and recruit operatives. A central mechanic is permadeath; if an operative sustains three serious injuries, they are killed in action, resulting in the loss of all character progression.

While the title earned a high Metacritic score of 86, the launch was marked by technical hurdles. Although version 1.1 was released on September 9 to address critical bugs, players have continued to report technical issues, specifically frequent stuttering on PlayStation 5.

Despite the game’s success, developer Bit Reactor has faced significant internal turmoil. Reports indicate that approximately 80% of the studio’s staff were placed on unpaid leave just weeks before the game’s release due to exhausted cash reserves. The studio remains embroiled in a legal dispute between co-founders Kelly and Foertsch, with Kelly alleging she was pushed out of her ownership role.
