Zach Cregger Resident Evil film adaptation

Overview

Director Zach Cregger is developing a new ‘Resident Evil’ film adaptation that provides a peripheral perspective on the Raccoon City disaster. The narrative follows a medical courier, Bryan (played by Austin Abrams), during a single night of bioterrorism-induced chaos. The story is intended to run parallel to the events of Resident Evil 2 and is designed to be accessible to viewers without prior knowledge of the video game franchise. To capture the authentic atmosphere of survival horror, Cregger emphasized resource management and intense, claustrophobic pacing. The production utilized locations in the Czech Republic to recreate a snowy, North American-style setting.

Following test screenings where feedback indicated the film was ‘too funny,’ Cregger stripped out jokes to maintain tension and focus on a sinister, body-horror aesthetic. The resulting film, titled ‘The Hive’ (or ‘A Kaptár’/‘Resident Evil: Noche Cero’), features an original story and characters rather than legacy figures like Leon S. Kennedy. While some critics noted a blend of horror and dark comedy, the film incorporates subtle nods to the Capcom franchise, such as visual references to green herbs, healing sprays, and specific ammunition boxes.

After premiering on September 18, 2026, the film achieved significant commercial and critical success. It earned over $196 million globally against an $80 million budget shortly after release, eventually reaching a worldwide total of $361.1 million by mid-October. Critically, the film holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Cregger has expressed satisfaction with the reception, though he noted that high audience expectations and internet scrutiny regarding minor details felt overwhelming during the process. He has indicated interest in a potential sequel should performance warrant it.
