Argentina 2027 Peronist election contest
Overview
In early August 2026, Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof launched his 2027 presidential campaign by opening a local office in Mendoza. Supported by figures such as Infrastructure Minister Gabriel Katopodis, Avellaneda Mayor Jorge Ferraresi, and CTA Secretary-General Hugo Yasky, the move intensified an internal power struggle within the Justicialist Party against former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
Kicillof has utilized the Movimiento Derecho al Futuro (MDF) to build a political platform, coordinating senior officials through a covert WhatsApp network named ‘Provincias’. This group, which includes Vice-Governor Verónica Magario and ministers Andrés Larroque and Daniel Katopodis, is tasked with promoting the MDF brand across all 135 districts of Buenos Aires Province and beyond, while explicitly refusing to hand over the movement’s franchise to other factions.
On August 12, 2026, the MDF held a plenary meeting at the Centro Cultural Morándel in Buenos Aires under the slogan ‘Axel 2027’. Attended by Production Minister Augusto Costa and former Chief of Cabinet Juan Manuel Abal Medina, the gathering aimed to integrate social and union groups like Movimiento Evita and Barrios de Pie into the MDF framework.
By mid-August, the movement expanded its territorial reach through regional meetings. In Ramallo, Buenos Aires, Mayor Fernando Espinoza emphasized the need for unity under Kicillof. In Chajarí, Entre Ríos, the Patria y Futuro space—which integrates the MDF—met with local mayors and union leaders to discuss a national alternative focused on federalism and regional economic challenges. Kicillof is also pursuing a federal agenda through scheduled visits to provinces like Chaco to meet with Senator Jorge Capitanich and labor leaders.
