Overview

In early July, Alpha Bank Cyprus reinforced its executive team, while Alpha Bank and UniCredit launched a unified platform for corporate clients in Greece and Bulgaria. CaixaBank’s chief executive warned that Spain’s political fragmentation reduced foreign direct investment by 12% in 2025. Eurobank and BBVA also engaged in significant capital-return actions. Eurobank completed a €9.79 million share buy-back in early July, followed by a €12.3 million repurchase (13–17 July) and a €2.46 million repurchase (27–31 July) that brought its treasury holdings to 18,842,347 shares. Between 24 and 28 August, the bank acquired an additional 1,077,536 shares at an average price of €4.5820, bringing its total treasury holdings to 23,578,211 shares. During this period, the bank also completed the 8th phase of its stock option program for management and staff, issuing 6,555,561 new common shares. To strengthen its Minimum Requirement for Own Funds and Eligible Liabilities (MREL), Eurobank announced the issuance of a new seven-year Senior Preferred green bond. Eurobank continued its capital management strategy by acquiring 1,179,047 treasury shares between 31 August and 4 September at an average price of €4.6146 per share, bringing its total treasury holdings to 24,757,258 shares. In Spain, BBVA and CaixaBank have advanced their respective repurchase programs. BBVA has nearly reached 25% execution of the first €1 billion tranche of a new €2 billion program, having spent approximately €247 million to acquire more than 9.96 million shares following a €4 billion extraordinary buyback completed on 3 August.
