Greek disaster aid expands, flood protection contracts

Since late May 2026 the Greek State Aid Committee has rolled out multiple disaster‑relief packages, from €1.5 million for Zakynthos to a €140 million SME subsidy for the Northern Development Regions and €7.05 million for water‑supply reconstruction in the North Aegean. The Ministry of Environment and Energy’s €86 million forest‑restoration programme for the Evros region, launched on 13 July, is now in its final implementation phase; anti‑erosion works exceeding €10 million are completed and anti‑flood works (€48.7 million) are near completion under the “Antinero” scheme, which also funds forest cleaning, fire‑breaks and road upgrades. Reforestation has planted over 54 000 seedlings across 1 146 ha of Daïa National Park and a new raptor observatory is open to the public. On Zakynthos the municipality signed a two‑year waste‑collection contract costing about €4.8 million annually, sparking criticism from opposition leader George Tsourounakis over a projected €6.5 million extra burden on residents. The North Aegean Region’s €8 million grant scheme continues to support tourism‑culture and agricultural‑processing projects on Chios, Mytilene and other islands. By mid‑July the General Secretariat for Natural Disaster Impact Restoration reported more than 5 000 repair permits for buildings damaged by the “Daniel” floods, amounting to roughly €36.5 billion in free state aid, heavily concentrated in Karditsa, Palamas and Farkadona.

On 29 July Regional Governor Fanis Spanos signed flood‑protection contracts for Delphi (€200 000) and Doryla (€300 000) under the 2021‑2025 Regional Development Programme, targeting river‑bed cleaning and stream restoration. He also approved a €500 000 sustainable‑urban project in Chalkida, upgrading the pedestrian network, adding LED lighting, improving accessibility for people with reduced mobility and expanding green spaces, aiming to enhance safety and curb the city’s environmental footprint.
