High-tech FDI growth and economic shifts in Vietnam
Overview
The surge in high-tech Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Northern Vietnam continues to evolve, with specific provinces demonstrating massive cumulative inflows. In the first eight months of 2026, Bac Ninh recorded over $14.5 billion in cumulative FDI, driven largely by a 201% increase in the electronics and optical component manufacturing sector. Major corporations including Samsung, Foxconn, Amkor, and Goertek remain key players in the region.
Quang Ninh attracted approximately $1.117 billion during the same period, maintaining its focus on high-tech, renewable energy, and semiconductors. In Central Vietnam, Da Nang is advancing its goal of becoming a financial and technology hub, securing $358 million in FDI during the first half of 2026 with a specific focus on AI and semiconductor microchips.
To support this industrial expansion, there is a nationwide emphasis on human resource development. While provinces like Dong Thap and Hung Yen are working to restructure vocational training to meet the needs of the semiconductor and electronics sectors, challenges persist in higher education. Specifically, the high cost of laboratory infrastructure required for training specialists in AI and semiconductor manufacturing remains a significant hurdle.
Broader economic shifts are also appearing in the financial sector. Banking liquidity has improved as capital mobilization growth has begun to outpace credit growth, easing short-term pressures despite relatively high interest rates. Meanwhile, the government continues to focus on institutional reforms and infrastructure to sustain this economic momentum.
