Liverpool and Chelsea compete for Camara after Monaco u-turn
Overview
The pursuit of AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has intensified following a collapsed transfer between Monaco and Chelsea during the summer deadline. Despite reaching a written agreement for approximately €55 million (£47 million), Monaco withdrew from the deal, reportedly due to complications in their own pursuit of Folarin Balogun. Chelsea officials described the reversal as “deeply unprofessional,” as medical examinations were already in progress.
Following the collapse, Liverpool emerged as a primary contender, reportedly reaching an agreement on personal terms with the 22-year-old for a five-year contract. Liverpool scouts monitored Camara during a recent victory over Paris Saint-Germain, where he demonstrated high performance metrics. The club views the Senegalese international as a key target to bolster their defensive midfield options, potentially as a successor to Alexis Mac Allister.
However, the transfer landscape has shifted as Monaco has increased Camara’s valuation to €70 million. While Chelsea remains interested, they are reportedly unwilling to meet this new asking price, leading to a deadlock. Competition for the player remains high, with interest also noted from Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Crystal Palace.
Separately, Liverpool continues to monitor the progress of Tyler Morton, the 23-year-old midfielder who joined Lyon for £15 million in 2025 and has become a central figure in the French side’s midfield.
