Netflix content reductions and expansions

Overview

Netflix’s August 2026 content reshuffle was followed by a series of large‑scale catalog purges across the summer. In June, the service announced the removal of more than 30 series, including *Kim’s Convenience*, *Blindspot*, *Zoey 101*, and *Sex and the City*, as well as 34 cult titles such as *Gomorra*, *Full House*, and *Degrassi: Next Class*. Licensing expirations prompted the deletion of 36 films—including *Heat*, *Pulp Fiction*, and *Us*—and a further batch of roughly 40 titles in July, featuring the *MonsterVerse* entries, *Godzilla*, *Joker*, and the *Spider‑Man* Sam Raimi trilogy. August saw another extensive round‑out, with movies like *Pretty Woman*, *American Gangster*, *Labyrinth*, and *Ex Machina* leaving the platform, alongside series such as *Fear the Walking Dead* and several anime seasons. As the August purges continued, Netflix announced that Peter Jackson’s *The Hobbit* trilogy—comprising *An Unexpected Journey*, *The Desolation of Smaug*, and *The Battle of the Five Armies*—will be removed from the platform at the end of August 2026.

Ongoing library overhauls in late August include the scheduled departure of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-winning film ‘Poor Things’ on September 7, 2026, and the biographical drama ‘The Hurricane’ on September 1, 2026. Other removals include the 2004 film ‘Catwoman’ and several Argentine productions, such as ‘Crane World’, ‘White Elephant’, and ‘Carancho’, slated to leave between August 17 and August 23.

While pruning legacy and licensed content, Netflix continues to expand its animation and trending catalog. The service is set to debut all seasons of ‘One-Punch Man’ in the USA starting August 25, 2026. Current trending titles include the Mexican thriller ‘La captura’, ‘Back to Black’, ‘The Last Wave’, and ‘Do Not Disturb’. The animation library remains bolstered by titles such as ‘Pluto’, ‘Cowboy Bebop’, ‘Attack on Titan’, and Studio Ghibli licenses.
