Peloponnese resource management modernization

The Peloponnese Region is implementing several technological initiatives to modernize its natural resource management and agricultural infrastructure. Initially, the region began a project to digitize historical soil studies and maps. Managed by the Agricultural University of Athens, this effort converts decades of scientific data into a geospatial database and web applications to support sustainable farming and informed decision-making for farmers. Following this, the regional government, under Governor Dimitris Ptochos, allocated €1.5 million toward the ‘Peloponnese 2021–2027’ program to upgrade water supply networks. This initiative focuses on installing smart metering, telemetry, and leak detection systems to improve drinking water management, reduce energy consumption, and minimize water loss. Expanding these efforts, the Peloponnese Region has approved a series of major infrastructure and utility projects totaling over €4.35 million. Under the ‘Peloponnese 2021–2027’ program, Governor Ptochos activated a €1.5 million call for proposals for municipalities and water utilities to implement remote control and monitoring systems. These upgrades aim to reduce water leaks by more than 30%, save 360,000 cubic meters of water annually, and decrease energy consumption by over 20%. Furthermore, the Regional Committee approved €2.85 million for various safety and infrastructure works across Argolis, Arcadia, Corinthia, Laconia, and Messenia. These include flood protection measures in Argolis and Laconia, road maintenance in Argolis and Messenia, and planning for agricultural electrification in Corinthia. More recently, regional water strategy has shifted toward the Argolis region following discussions between Governor Ptochos and the mayors of Nafplio and Argos-Mykines. Authorities have decided to move away from a proposed large-scale processing plant in Anavalo in favor of constructing a water treatment plant in Lernea. Kostas Karapavlos, President of the Nafplio Municipal Council, noted this shift followed a unanimous council resolution and “significant citizen mobilization” regarding irrigation and drinking water resources.
